This summer, I did an overview of some lexical definitions, and their differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The short version: The differences are perhaps more interesting for someone studying dictionaries than intrapreneurship. On a critical note, one might question why these resources are paid for and recommended to students by many universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u273b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/book\/10.1002\/9781118785317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wiley Encyclopedia of Management<\/a> <\/strong>from 2015 doesn&#8217;t have a unique entry for intrapreneurship, but mentions it under \u201dentrepreneurship\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>Entrepreneurship inside organizations has sometimes been termed \u201ccorporate entrepreneurship\u201d or \u201cintrapreneurship.\u201d Both usages emphasize the role of the entrepreneur as one who organizes a venture and bears some degree of risk in return for rewards.<\/em><\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/doi-org.ludwig.lub.lu.se\/10.1002\/9781118785317.weom110146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arnold C Cooper, Wiley Encyclopedia of Management (2015)<\/a> <span id='easy-footnote-1-58' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href=\"https:\/\/gustavs.se\/intra\/how-do-dictionaries-define-intrapreneurship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-58\" title=\"Arnold C. Cooper, &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/doi-org.ludwig.lub.lu.se\/10.1002\/9781118785317.weom110146&quot;&gt;\u201dEntrepreneurship\u201d, Wiley Encyclopedia of Management&lt;\/a&gt;, Volume 11. Organizational Behavior, 21 January 2015\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<p>This is a fairly broad yet distinct definition: it includes all organisations, but interestingly requires both <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skin_in_the_Game_(book)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skin in the game<\/a> and something to gain. The latter one connects to a common question in research on intrapreneurship: <em>what drives the intrapreneur?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wiley definition basically equates intrapreneurship with entrepreneurship in organisations, which is probably the most popular and easy way to explain the concept. The only caveat is perhaps that it depends on an agreed-upon definition of entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u273b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/cc\/cambridgeenglish\/catalog\/business-professional-and-vocational\/cambridge-business-english-dictionary\/cambridge-business-english-dictionary-paperback\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/cc\/cambridgeenglish\/catalog\/business-professional-and-vocational\/cambridge-business-english-dictionary\/cambridge-business-english-dictionary-paperback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Cambridge Business English Dictionary<\/a><\/strong> from 2011 have entries for both <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/intrapreneur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intrapreneur<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/intrapreneurship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intrapreneurship<\/a>, the latter being:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>\u201dthe willingness or ability of people within a large company to take direct responsibility for turning ideas into profitable new products, services, businesses, etc.\u201d<\/em><\/p><cite><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/cc\/cambridgeenglish\/catalog\/business-professional-and-vocational\/cambridge-business-english-dictionary\/cambridge-business-english-dictionary-paperback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cambridge business English dictionary<\/a><\/em> (2011)<span id='easy-footnote-2-58' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href=\"https:\/\/gustavs.se\/intra\/how-do-dictionaries-define-intrapreneurship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-58\" title=\"&lt;em&gt;Cambridge business English dictionary&lt;\/em&gt;. 2011. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Pretty straightforward but exclusive: it reduces the possible host organization to \u201da large company\u201d, stipulates direct responsibility as a method and profit as an outcome (or at least the desired outcome).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u273b<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordreference.com\/page\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Oxford Reference<\/strong><\/a> boasts \u201d2 million digitized entries across Oxford University Press\u2019s Dictionaries, Companions and Encyclopedias\u201d. Unfortunately, not one of them is \u201dIntrapreneurship\u201d<span id='easy-footnote-3-58' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href=\"https:\/\/gustavs.se\/intra\/how-do-dictionaries-define-intrapreneurship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-3-58\" title=\"Except for &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/www.oxfordreference.com\/view\/10.1093\/acref\/9780191727283.001.0001\/b-en-fr-00008-0005239&quot;&gt;The Oxford Business French Dictionary&lt;\/a&gt; (English-French)\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. There is however three entries on \u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordreference.com\/view\/10.1093\/oi\/authority.20110803100009295\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intrapreneur<\/a>\u201d, presented here in order of publication date:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Dictionary of Human Resource Management<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordreference.com\/view\/10.1093\/acref\/9780199298761.001.0001\/acref-9780199298761\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2008<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>\u201demployees who behave in an entrepreneurial manner within an organization. For example, they might use their initiative to develop new ideas for products or services, devise new ways of working, or suggest systems and processes to improve efficiency.\u201d<\/em><\/p><cite>Edmund Heery and Mike Noon, 2008<span id='easy-footnote-4-58' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href=\"https:\/\/gustavs.se\/intra\/how-do-dictionaries-define-intrapreneurship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-4-58\" title=\"&lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/acref\/9780199298761.001.0001&quot;&gt;A Dictionary of Human Resource Management (2nd rev. ed.)&lt;\/a&gt;\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a reasonably broad definition, as it does not mandate a productive outcome, and it encompasses all types of organisations and employees<span id='easy-footnote-5-58' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href=\"https:\/\/gustavs.se\/intra\/how-do-dictionaries-define-intrapreneurship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-5-58\" title=\"The dictionary credits Rosabeth Moss Kanter rather than Gifford Pinchot III for the term intrapreneur. I suppose this is because her book \u201dThe Change Masters\u201d features the term before Pinchot published his book \u201dIntrapreneuring\u201d. Pinchot did however use the term, and also got credited for it in The Economist, before either book was published.\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. Some might argue that a mere suggestion from an employee doesn&#8217;t make her or him an intrapreneur. Luckily, they might also find a possible answer in another distinction, made by Kte&#8217;pi (2012), I&#8217;ll get back to that one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Dictionary of Business and Management<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordreference.com\/view\/10.1093\/acref\/9780199234899.001.0001\/acref-9780199234899\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2009<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>\u201dAn executive or senior manager of a large firm who uses the entrepreneurial approach to management.\u201d<\/em><\/p><cite>Jonathan Law, 2009<span id='easy-footnote-6-58' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href=\"https:\/\/gustavs.se\/intra\/how-do-dictionaries-define-intrapreneurship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-6-58\" title=\"&lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/acref\/9780199234899.001.0001&quot;&gt;A Dictionary of Business and Management (5 ed.)&lt;\/a&gt;\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This definition diverges from most others. Here, only leadership in power to <em>mandate corporate entrepreurship<\/em>, by creating internal markets for services and thus, like in Haier&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/work-futures\/evolution-of-the-platform-organization-3-haier-rendanheyi-and-zhang-ruimins-vision-d8afceef7f5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rendanheyi<\/a><\/em>, \u201dgiving subsidiary companies the choice of using the internal services or of going outside to independent suppliers\u201d, can be intrapreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonathan Law recognises that corporate entrepreneurship mandated through command and control also can also be attempted in the public sector, noting the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NHS_internal_market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1990 National Health Service and Community Care Act<\/a> in the UK. Law briefly also mentions the problems with this approach<span id='easy-footnote-7-58' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href=\"https:\/\/gustavs.se\/intra\/how-do-dictionaries-define-intrapreneurship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-7-58\" title=\"Law wrote (in 2009) that NHS internal market was discontinued in 1999. However, as the Wikipedia article on this states (today, 2020), much of it persists and might rather be discontinued now, with the &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/www.longtermplan.nhs.uk\/publication\/nhs-long-term-plan\/&quot;&gt;NHS Long Term Plan&lt;\/a&gt;.\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Law&#8217;s definition helps to prove that the understanding of what intrapreneurship means is fragmented, but it can be considered an outlier. Most scholars or practioners would probably not agree to this definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201dA Dictionary of Economics\u201d <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/acref\/9780199237043.001.0001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2009<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>A manager whose status changes from company employee to proprietor of an independent firm. This change is encouraged and possibly financed by the former employer, in the expectation that increased autonomy and improved incentives for the intrapreneur will raise the parent firm&#8217;s profits.<\/em><\/p><cite>Black et al. (2009)<span id='easy-footnote-8-58' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href=\"https:\/\/gustavs.se\/intra\/how-do-dictionaries-define-intrapreneurship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-8-58\" title=\"&lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/www.oxfordreference.com\/search?q=intrapreneur&quot;&gt;&#8220;intrapreneur.&#8221; &lt;em&gt;Oxford Reference&lt;\/em&gt;&lt;\/a&gt;; \u201dA Dictionary of Economics\u201d (3 ed.), Oxford University Press, retrieved August 29, 2020\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a narrow but less divergent definition of the term. It excludes intrapreneurs in other organisations than commercial, but also limits intrapreneurs to the first generation leadership in successful <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corporate_spin-off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corporate and voluntary spin-offs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u273b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Merriam Webster (2020):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merriam Webster also doesn&#8217;t have an entry for intrapreneurship. It does however  offer the following definition for intrapreneur:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201da corporate executive who develops new enterprises within the corporation\u201d<\/p><cite><em>Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary<\/em>, s.v. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/intrapreneur.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intrapreneur<\/a>,\u201d accessed November 22, 2020<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again, the intrapreneur here is a senior manager within a large company (my interpretation: <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/c-suite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C-suite<\/a>). I can&#8217;t help but wonder where the idea that only executives can be intrapreneurs come from. The latter part of the description however, defining the intrapreneurial project as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/enterprise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enterprise<\/a>, I find much more fitting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u273b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201dThe Encyclopedia of New Venture Management\u201d<\/strong> (2012)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a counterpoint to A Dictionary of Economics, one could consider the following passage about <em>Corporate Entrepreneurship and Innovation<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>One currently accepted description of corporate entrepreneurship is the investment or funding of a new venture that is typically different from the organization&#8217;s core business domain; however, the entity typically remains a part of the existing organization.<\/em><\/p><cite>Matthew R. Marvel (2012) \u201dEncyclopedia of New Venture Management\u201d<span id='easy-footnote-10-58' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href=\"https:\/\/gustavs.se\/intra\/how-do-dictionaries-define-intrapreneurship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-10-58\" title=\"Marvel, M.R. (2012), \u201d&lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/us.sagepub.com\/en-us\/nam\/encyclopedia-of-new-venture-management\/book235458&quot;&gt;Encyclopedia of New Venture Management&lt;\/a&gt;\u201d, Sage Publishing, May 2012)&lt;\/cite&gt;&lt;\/blockquote&gt;\n\n\n\n&lt;p&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;\n\n\n\n&lt;p&gt;In that same book, Bill Kte&#8217;pi also offers another definition: &lt;\/p&gt;\n\n\n\n&lt;blockquote class=&quot;wp-block-quote&quot;&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Entrepreneurial individuals working within a corporation are sometimes called intrapreneurs, promoting new ventures for the corporation to take on and actively encouraging or pursuing business development\u2014the creation of new products and markets.&lt;\/em&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;cite&gt;Bill Kte&#8217;pi (2012) \u201dEncyclopedia of New Venture Management\u201d&lt;span id=&#039;easy-footnote-9-58&#039; class=&#039;easy-footnote-margin-adjust&#039;&gt;&lt;\/span&gt;&lt;span class=&#039;easy-footnote&#039;&gt;&lt;a href=&#039;https:\/\/gustavs.se\/intra\/how-do-dictionaries-define-intrapreneurship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-9-58&#039; title=&#039;&#039;&gt;&lt;sup&gt;9&lt;\/sup&gt;&lt;\/a&gt;&lt;\/span&gt;Kte&#8217;pi, B. (2012), \u201d&lt;a href=&quot;http:\/\/sk.sagepub.com\/reference\/newventuremgmt\/n20.xml&quot;&gt;Encyclopedia of New Venture Management&lt;\/a&gt;\u201d, Sage Publishing, May 2012)\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Kte&#8217;pi also makes an interesting distinction between \u201dchampions\u201d of intrapreneurial ventures \u2013 a role I interpret to be a venture&#8217;s unofficial product manager: seeing the venture through to success \u2013 and intrapreneurs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>Whereas intrapreneurs originate ideas and innovations, champions need not necessarily be the originators of the ideas behind the ventures they champion. The role is an unofficial one.<\/em><\/p><cite>Bill Kte&#8217;pi (2012) \u201dEncyclopedia of New Venture Management\u201d<span id='easy-footnote-11-58' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href=\"https:\/\/gustavs.se\/intra\/how-do-dictionaries-define-intrapreneurship\/#easy-footnote-bottom-11-58\" title=\"\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span>Kte&#8217;pi, B.
